What is a dental cleaning for my pet?
A complete dental cleaning includes an oral exam by our veterinarian, a full cleaning under the gum line with a hand-held ultrasonic scaler, a scaling and polishing of the visible part of your pet's teeth, and a post-cleaning fluoride treatment. This process is completed while your pet is anesthetized.
What are the benefits of having my pet's teeth cleaned?
First and foremost, cleaning your pet's teeth will help prevent Periodontal Disease caused by bacteria that hide below the gum-line. As periodontal disease progresses, it can cause damage to the bones around the roots of the teeth, causing loose and extremely painful teeth, leading to the need for the tooth to be extracted.
Secondly, periodontal disease can lead to a whole host of other systemic problems for your pet, including heart, liver, and kidney disease.
What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?
- Bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Bleeding or red gums
- Problems picking up food or toys
- Bloody or ropey saliva
- Not wanting their head touched
- Chewing on one side of the mouth
Can you perform a dental cleaning without anesthesia?
No, unfortunately, in order to get all the way below the gum line, it is necessary for your pet to be anesthetized.
How much does a dental cleaning cost?
It varies depending on species and size of your pet. During February, the price, including discount, for a small dog starts at around $233.00. This price includes a pre-surgical exam, pre-anesthetic bloodwork panel, IV catheter and fluids while under anesthesia, heart and respiratory monitoring by a member of our patient care team, full scaling and polishing of the teeth, and a post cleaning fluoride treatment. The only item not included in this price is tooth extractions should your pet need any teeth pulled. Please feel free to call our office for an estimated price in having your pet's teeth cleaned.
